The number of staff employed in public sector prisons on a full-time basis at 31 March in the past ten years are as follows: Year 2004 – 43,710; 2005 – 44,090; 2006 – 44,400; 2007 – 44,660; 2008 – 45,350; 2009 – 46,010; 2010 – 44,280; 2011 – 43,210; 2012 – 40,040; 2013 – 37,560.
